GETTING A DOG…A GOOD IDEA?

THE ADDITION OF A DOG TO YOUR FAMILY

A dog is wonderful, loving, entertaining and loyal.  Whether he comes with a pedigree or from a pound, a dog is just about the perfect friend.  However, he will demand a lot of you, because he relies on you for nearly everything – food, water, shelter, veterinary care, exercise, training, grooming and protection.  While it is important that you choose the right dog for your needs, it is equally important to ensure that you can meet his.  You need to prepare your home for his arrival, and make him a welcome and well-behaved member of your community.  The responsibilities of ownership are great, but the love and friendship you’ll receive are priceless.

Before you run out and purchase or adopt a dog (please consider the latter) especially at Christmas time, please consider the following:

  • Family Matters – Single?  Married?  Children?  Existing pets?
  • The 10-15 year commitment you are making
  • Should you consider a cat?
  • Feeding, play, exercise, training, and grooming are all essential needs.
  • Financial Burden
  • Learn as much as you can about breeds appropriate for you and your family
  • Puppy or Older dog
  • Ask your shelter to help in selection – They are more than happy to help

HURRICANE DISASTER PLAN WILDFIRES DISASTERS

HURRICANES AND OTHER DISASTERS:

A good disaster plan will prepare you for disasters that come with some warning ( hurricanes, wildfires, or floods ) and those that strike suddenly such as chemical spills or tornadoes.  You’ll even be ready for extended power outages that become true emergencies if they happen during a heat wave or ice storm.

TO-DO LIST FOR PROTECTING YOUR PETS IN A DISASTER

1)     Start getting ready now

         *  ID your pet                                                 *  Find a safe place to stay ahead of time

         *  Put together your disaster kit            *  Plan for your pet in case you’re not at home

2)    If you evacuate – Take your pet

3)    If you stay at home – Do it Safely

HOME SWEET HOME PET SITTERS: THE GREAT DEBATE

SHOULD YOUR PET STAY OR GO?  WHO SHOULD CARE FOR YOUR PET WHILE YOU ARE AWAY?

Many pet owners have wrestled with these questions for years.  Home Sweet Home Pet Sitters is in the business of doing what is best for your pet, not your pet sitter or kennel.  Our recommendations have always been based on this because we recognize the importance of quality pet care.  Our experience and the expertise of veterinarians and organizations such as the Humane Society will hopefully provide enough information for you to make an informed decision and one that is in the best  interest of your pet.  The primary objective should be to eliminate any stress your pet may experience while you are away.  On a more personal note, several years ago we owned a beautiful “Sheltie” that would cower if he saw a suitcase.  We learned quickly and acted accordingly.

What are your options?

*  Friends, neighbors or relatives – Usually not a viable option because few people have someone qualified should an emergency occur or they do not want to impose such a responsibility on someone.

*  Kennels – If you decide to board your pet, get references and personally inspect the kennel. Your Vet can help you in this regard.

*  Hire a Pet Sitter – We feel this is the best option because your pet is kept in his own home, familiar surroundings, will be played with and kept on his normal schedule.  HSH tailors our pet sits to you!

Should you decide to hire a pet sitting company be sure to set up a meeting with you AND your pet!

The Humane Society recommends having your pet microchipped before you leave them anyplace unfamiliar to the animal!

Home Sweet Home Pet Sitters: Travelling? Should You Take Your Cat?

SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR CAT ON VACATION?

Cats do not enjoy change and taking them on trips is usually not a good idea.  Unless you are moving or going on an a very long vacation, get a pet sitter so your cat will not have to experience the stress of riding for hours or days in a crate and adjust to a new temporary living arrangement.

“HOME SWEET HOME” TRAVELLING: SHOULD YOUR PET STAY OR GO?

PLANNING A TRIP?

Pet owners planning to travel for business or pleasure have an important decision to make.  Should you take your companion animals along or leave them at home.  While we know how tempting it may be to take them along, you have to consider that some animals are not suited to travel due to temperament, illness, or physical impairment.

The most humane approach is to think of the animals needs first.  You may think that your dog won’t be able to tolerate separation from you and taking him is a good idea.  But if you are vacationing, will you have to leave him in a hotel room or strange kennel?  This will make your pet more anxious than ever, so finding a good, experienced pet sitter and leaving your pet in his own home would probably be a better choice!
